Project [in English]

Expense Visualizer

In 2009, a Canadian organization called VisibleGovernment organized hackathons where volunteers scraped the data recently made available under the Canadian Proactive Disclosure directive.

The resulting dataset consisted in an impressive 26,000 records, but still remained difficult to explore without a proper interface.

At the time, public datasets were still quite rare and very few people had started working on visualizing government financial data. The Expense Visualizer project was an attempt at applying interactive data-visualization to try to make sense of big (if not dull) datasets.

You can see screenshots of the application below:

The application is deployed online at http://ffctn.com/a/expensevisualizer, and you can read more about the project in this presentation I did at Data, Stories & co. in Montréal.
